A palimpsest: a project enfolding a series of descriptions

Beyond the Static: Visual Essay for Visual Communication

Theories of culture and language are increasingly concerned with issues of identity, responding to new influxes of people, languages and cultures brought into contact by globalism. Discussions center on issues of cosmopolitan versus nationalist identities (see, e.g., Castells, 1997; Urry, 2000), and how individuals and groups find ways to interact and live together. This essay chronicles several projects from the last six years in a hybrid visual format. This essay was published in Visual Communication, February 2009 (Sage: London and New York).
